How to Determine the Quality of Nylon Coated Steel Wire
Judging the quality of nylon coated steel wire hinges on a comprehensive evaluation of four aspects: material composition, manufacturing process details, physical properties, and actual testing. This ensures reliable performance in terms of load-bearing capacity, durability, and safety.
1. Observe the quality of raw materials
Steel wire core material: High-quality products should use 304 stainless steel or high-carbon steel as the inner core. A preliminary judgment can be made through magnetism—304 stainless steel is weakly magnetic or non-magnetic, while ordinary steel wire is clearly magnetic.
Nylon coating purity: Genuine nylon coatings have a uniform gloss and smooth feel. When burned, they emit a slight burnt wool smell (a characteristic of amide groups), while inferior PVC coatings turn black, emit black smoke, and have a pungent odor.
2. Check the coating process and structure
Coating uniformity: The surface should be free of bubbles, cracks, and exposed wires. It should feel smooth to the touch. Pay particular attention to whether the coating cracks at bends.
Double-layer coating for superior performance: High-end models feature a double-coating design of "nylon + PVC outer layer," enhancing UV resistance and anti-slip properties, suitable for long-term outdoor use.
Structure: A 7×7 or multi-strand twisted structure is recommended, as it is more resistant to bending and fatigue than single-strand steel wire, and less prone to breakage.
3. Simple on-site testing methods:
Bending test: Bend the steel wire repeatedly more than 10 times, observing whether the coating cracks or the wire breaks.
Load-bearing test: Suspend a 20-30kg weight and leave it stationary for 10 minutes, checking for obvious stretching or permanent deformation.
Abrasion resistance test: Rub the wire back and forth 100 times with sandpaper, observing the degree of coating wear. High-quality products should show no obvious scratches or peeling.
4. Refer to authoritative testing standards
Nylon coated steel wire can be professionally tested according to the following national standards: GB/T 8834-2006 "Ropes - Determination of physical and mechanical properties"; ISO 1140:1990 "Ropes - Polyamide". These standards cover core indicators such as tensile strength, elongation, and aging resistance. Products with test reports are more trustworthy.
